Mal and his brother, Jones Caldwell were Spartan High graduates. They were WWII veterans. And they were business partners beginning in 1967 when they opened Southeastern Printing. For the next 20 years they ran the business until Jones passed away and Mal was ready to retire.
Mal’s son, Jan, had worked in the family business since the age of 15 – part time in the summers and during college. Jan was Director of Printing Services at USC Upstate during his college years and later became the Plant Manager of Band & White – a printing company in Spartanburg (now closed).
Jan took over the family business in 1987 and at that time, there were 3 employees. Today, there are 15 employees – 3 designers, 4 pre-press and bindery workers, 5 pressmen and 3 office administrators. Toni, Jan’s wife joined the company in 1996 and works in the accounting end of the business. Erin Caldwell, granddaughter of Jones, works as a designer.
Courtney, Jan and Toni’s daughter, is the office manager (above) – and her husband, Bryan King is a pressman. At times, their son, Cayden (15 months old) helps around the office – often getting ink on his hands.
The staff of Southeastern Printing still enjoys serving clients they have had since 1967 offering complete commercial design and printing services to Spartanburg and beyond.
